An drinking vessel
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achaemenid_Empire
A Golden , Period, circa 538 - 331 B.C,
Description: used as a drinking vessels in Persia ,this trumpet-shaped form worked in gold attests to the exceptional skill of goldsmiths. The of this depicts the forequarters of a winged lion. It is shown with modeled head, open mouth, prominent circular eyes beneath stylized upward-swept brows, and ears that sit toward the back of the head. The neck and chest are engraved with a worked mane composed of symmetrical overlapping curls that further extends to the base of the small section of torso behind the wings. Attached on both fl rise two great wings, that curl gracefully inward at the tip. The body of the beaker is horizontally fl in typical style with a decorative frieze just beneath the rim. The vessel was created by hammering, engraving, soldering and riveting together its separately made parts.
This extraordinary vessel is a superb example of art for royal use and may be compared with numerous parallels in decorative arts. While the lion stands for the authority of the ruler, its wings make it a supernatural being that can guard the liquid inside. An almost exact parallel is the cent gold in the Iran Museum in with a horizontally fl beaker to a of a snarling lion with large, elegantly curved, separately attached wings. A gold in the Metropolitan Museum of Art has as its a leonine creature with a crested mane and small engraved wings emanating from B-shaped muscle outlines on its haunches.
